Community Based Learning Program

Finding Meaningful Learning Opportunities in Community Settings.

Our Program

The DCO Community Based Learning Program provides opportunities (to small groups or individuals) to participate in a variety of meaningful daily activities. Each activity takes place within an inclusive community setting. We base schedules on the interests, preferences and personal outcomes identified in each participant’s Individual Support Plan.

Community Integration

Community based activities allow individuals the opportunity to practice skills and make positive choices. The activities can include:

  • Accessing Community Resources
  • Social Activities
  • Sports and Recreation Classes
  • Continued Education Classes
  • Functional Skill Development

Community Volunteer Sites

Volunteer sites are scheduled weekly and provide individuals with experience in supporting and assisting various agencies in the community while developing increased independence and self-assurance.

DCO Community Based Learning Provides

  • Skill Development leads toward personal independence, self-awareness and the development of new interests.
  • Opportunities are presented for self-advocacy through making informed choices.
  • Focus Programs relate to communication, socialization and increased inclusive experiences through participation and use of community programs and resources.
  • Volunteer opportunities open up within the community.

Who Is This Program For?

Any individual who meets the following criteria may be eligible for DCO’s Community Based Learning Program:

  • Is 16 years or older
  • Is no longer in school
  • Meets the criteria for developmental disabilities
  • Is referred by a multidisciplinary team with recommendations for skill development, community training or volunteering

Program Cost

Referrals and support come from the following sources:

  • Missouri Department of Mental Health
  • Division of Developmental Disabilities
  • Springfield Regional Office
  • Private pay
